National Policy Dialogue on Non-oil Exports, 2023

Theme: Prioritizing non-oil exports as catalyst for Nigeria’s economic revitalization.

Date held: Wednesday, September 6, 2023

The Background Concept

national dialogue nonoil exports

The Nigerian Naira is facing a decline in value and the country’s foreign reserves are dwindling, but the non-oil export sector offers a valuable solution to this problem.

Diversifying Nigeria’s economy away from crude oil is crucial, which has been the main export for many years. This is especially important now, as the removal of fuel subsidies has caused inflation rates to skyrocket and the purchasing power of Nigerians to weaken, leading to increased poverty levels.

Therefore, it is imperative that we come together to address the challenges facing the non-oil export sector and create a favorable environment for its growth. In line with this objective, Talking Trade & Investment Global, the Network of Practicing Non-oil Exporters of Nigeria, and their media partners, BusinessDay and Premium Times, organized a one-day stakeholder dialogue focused on non-oil exports.

The Event

The event started with a keynote address from the special guest, Hajia Aisha Abubakar, former Minister of State, Industry, Trade & Investments.

In her address, Aisha Abubakar advised stakeholders in the non-oil export value chain on the importance of collaboration to overcome the challenges faced by the sector and ensure its growth.

While acknowledging the long overdue need for a change from over-dependence on revenue from crude oil exports, Aisha opined that the non-oil export sector holds a veritable solution to the dwindling foreign reserves and the falling value of the nation’s currency, the Nigerian Naira.

“This is because, significantly, fuel subsidy removal has plunged many Nigerians into the poverty net due to unprecedented inflation and the weakened purchasing power it has brought.
